The SET has been hard at work for the upcoming Small Group Leader Formation training here at Good Shepherd. We hope you remember Archbishop Hebda’s Pastoral Letter, “You Will Be My Witnesses,” that he released back in 2022. This first year of the SET is aimed at establishing small groups and training those parishioners who are called by the Holy Spirit to be small group leaders.

Many of you have questions about what this training and commitment is all about.

The small group process was created by the greatest leader in history, Jesus Christ. The SET is simply using the method that Jesus provided. Jesus called his 12 apostles and from those 12 apostles, gathered 72 to be his disciples sending them forth to grow in faith. In beginning these small groups, we are stepping out in faith and saying yes to being witness to the whole world, just as Jesus taught and encouraged His apostles to do.

The training is open to all people who feel they might be interested in helping to lead a group. You can receive the training and later decide this isn’t for you (but really, anyone can lead a group!). For the leader training, we would ask you to commit to attending as many of the seven Small Group Leader Formation trainings held on Thursdays starting September 28. There is both a morning (9am Start) and evening group (6:30pm Start) - choose what works best for you! The training will consist of time for prayer, education on how to run a small group, and lastly, heartfelt Holy Spirit-inspired discussion.

Parishes grow stronger when small groups are utilized—they allow us to participate in a family of faith, to have accountability, and to grow closer to Christ. We hope that we will see abundant fruit here at Good Shepherd as a result of our own small groups, and we are excited to gather a team of like-minded people to sow the seeds. After our small group leaders are trained, our goal is to have a variety of small groups kick off for Lent 2024. 

SET members have begun actively recruiting for this event; however, if you have not been approached and you are feeling called attend the leadership training, reach out to a SET member, the parish office, or sign up at goodshepherdgv.org/synod to let us know you plan to attend the training.
