Good Shepherd Parish Volunteer Opportunities
Ways You Can Serve:
Parish Ministries –
- Parish Pastoral Council Candidate – serve a three year term. Assist in implementing major parish pastoral programs and policies.
- Prayer Chain – pray for the needs of the parish and individual parishioner requests.
- Bible Study – Fall Spirituality Program – September 28-October 26 – 7 p.m. Thursdays
- Lenten Series
- Post Easter Series
- Pre-School Religious Education – work with 3 and 4 year olds during the 10:30 Mass.
- Children’s Liturgy of the Word – Present to children in kindergarten through 4th grade, the Liturgy of the Word for that Sunday.
- Eucharistic Minister – distribute communion during a Mass - rotating schedule.
- Ushers – be a welcoming minister during a weekend Mass or Holy Day Mass.
- Eucharistic Adoration – commit to praying in the Good Shepherd Chapel one hour each Friday.
- Nursery – volunteer to care from children from six months to 6 years during 10:30 liturgy.
- Welcome Committee – contact and welcome new parishioners and provide information to them. Assist with annual Welcome Brunch in January.
- Knights of Columbus – national, spiritually based men’s organization.
- Lectors – proclaim the Word of the Lord and announcements at Mass. Pastor chooses lectors. Rotating schedule. Training provided.
- Altar Server – youth in the parish beginning in 5th grade. Training provided. Rotating Mass schedule. May be asked to serve for funerals and weddings.
Community Outreach –
- Dinner At Your Door – deliver noon time meals to residents in St. Louis Park. Minimal time commitment. Every other month.
- Befrienders – visit people in the parish and offer spiritual and emotional help. Training provided.
- PRISM – provide assistance in staffing the office, intake advocate, drivers for transportation program, help in food shelf and clothes areas. Training provided.
- Crisis Nursery – Help in purchasing, preparing and serving of a noon meal the 3rd Sunday of every other month.
- Common Hope – volunteer to serve as part of Vision team, work on fundraisers.
- Blood Donor – donate blood on a semi-annual basis.
- Grief Support – for those who have experienced loss in their life and looking for some support.
- ACCL – promotes respect for and protection of all human life from conception until natural death. Volunteer for Pancake Breakfast, Mothers’ and Fathers’ Day sales.
Music Ministries –
- Adult Choir – high school youth and older – Thursday evening practice – 7-9 p.m.
- Youth Choir – children grades three through sixth – Wednesday 5:30-6:20 practice
- Shepherd’s Bells – age 13 years and older – Tuesday practice – 5:45 – 7 p.m.
- Instrumentalist/Accompanists – share your musical talents with the parish!
- Cantor – lead the congregation in the singing of hymns and psalms.
Service Ministries –
- Altar Robe Cleaning – collect, wash, iron and replace servers’ robes.
- Sacristy/Church cleaning – every Friday at 8 a.m. dusting, vacuuming, and straightening of books. Thorough cleaning twice a year. Can be done on a rotating basis.
- Vestment care – washing and ironing of Pastor’s albs.
- Vigil Lights – replace vigil lights before the Masses each weekend. Rotating basis.
- Funeral lunches – set tables, make coffee, serve lunch, clean up.
Good Shepherd School –
- Art Adventure – work with a classroom to share art projects. Training provided.
- Classroom Helper – assist the classroom teacher with tasks
- Lunchroom – work in the lunchroom serving nutritious meals to students
- Library – assist students in checking out materials in the Zellmer library
- Donut Sunday – one Sunday a month, setup, serve and clean up for Donut Sunday
- Learning Center – aid those students that need a little extra help
- School Board – be a part of this advisory board – elected in spring.
Social Activities –
- Parish Festival – April 21, 2007 – dinner, dance, auction and fun! Decorations, donations, dinner set up, games
- Turkey Bingo – November 19, 2006 – and evening of bingo with a turkey bonus – set up, pop popcorn, sell pop and bingo cards, clean up.
- Breakfast with Santa – December 2, 2006 – assist with this popular event and shopping adventure.
- Card Club – 1st and 3rd Wednesday each month in the Social Hall
- Bake Sales – December, April – bake, package, price and sell baked goods.
- Spring Salad Luncheon – May 12, 2007 - a women’s gathering for fun and fellowship on Mother’s Day Saturday.
- Lenten Soup Suppers – assist in preparing a simple meal of soup, bread and salad. Setup and clean up. Each Friday in Lent
- Parish Picnic – join in the fun with this annual event – games for children, food and fun.
